A free resource built by western riders, for western riders
Barrel racer • Trail rider • Texas Hill Country
I grew up on horseback in the Texas Hill Country. My first horse was a stubborn bay Quarter Horse mare my father bought at a sale for more than he probably should have — and my first saddle was a used Billy Cook that had seen better days but got me through a lot of miles. That saddle taught me more about leather condition and tree integrity than any guide ever could.
By the time I was competing in barrel racing regionally, I had bought and sold maybe a dozen saddles. I made mistakes — paid too much for pretty saddles with compromised trees, undersestimated dry leather, and once bought a saddle online based on a seller's description that turned out to be generously optimistic. Every mistake was expensive. I kept thinking: this information should be somewhere people can find it for free.
That's why I built this site in 2009. Not to sell saddles — I have no interest in running a marketplace or taking affiliate commissions. Just to put all the things I've learned into one place where other riders can benefit from them. For anyone who needs the saddle side covered in equal depth, UsedWesternSaddles.org is a free resource we recommend without reservation.
"The used saddle market can be genuinely confusing, and the mistakes are expensive. We built this site to close that knowledge gap — for free, with no selling agenda."
Every type of western saddle, from barrel racing to Wade ranch designs. Buying guides, inspection checklists, brand reviews, saddle fit for horse and rider, care and maintenance, and a comprehensive FAQ covering questions from complete beginners to experienced competitors. All free, all written from actual riding and buying experience.
We don't sell saddles, have affiliate links, or take money from brands. Our opinions are genuinely our own.
Every guide is written or reviewed by someone who has actually ridden and bought in the disciplines we cover.
Many of our FAQ entries come directly from questions sent in by readers. Keep them coming.
We don't sell your email, track you across the web, or use targeted ads. This is a simple informational website.
